California State University East Bay Student Portal Redesign

UX/UI Design

As an alumnus of California State University East Bay (CSUEB), I undertook the mission to revamp the CSUEB student portal, ensuring that every student, past and present, could access the resources necessary for their success.

ReDesign Schedule

I structured the project into phases for better organization. Phase 1 encompassed discovery and research, where interviews were conducted to define the design problem. Phase 2 focused on redesign and development, emphasizing usability and user testing to finalize the prototype.

SWOT Analysis

The CSUEB Student Portal Redesign project is poised to capitalize on its strengths in user-centric design and a phased approach to overcome weaknesses and leverage opportunities. However, it must remain vigilant in addressing threats, particularly in a competitive landscape and during the transition phase. The commitment to continuous improvement and user satisfaction will be key to this project.

Threats

Current Design

The existing portal's landing page displayed a lackluster appearance with issues in color usage and information hierarchy. The gray background and overwhelming red color scheme created confusion and a sense of 'danger.' The redesign aimed to make it visually appealing, user-friendly, and modern.

User Feedback

I used different methods like Interviews and surveys with current and first-time students who provided valuable insights. Current students stressed efficient access to academic resources, while first-time students sought clear guidance on registration and onboarding. Both groups desired an intuitive platform.

For First-time Students:

User Persona

Based on research and personal experience as a CSUEB student, I created personas representing diverse user types. This ensured the portal would cater to a wide range of needs.

User Journey Mapping

To redesign myCSUEB student portal I created a user journey to understand the different tasks a user will be performing on the portal. Understanding user tasks from sign-in to sign-out and their touchpoints (dashboard, academics, finances, campus life) helped create a user flow that simplified tasks for both returning and first-time users.

User Testing

A crucial round of usability testing provided insights and feedback. Users appreciated the existing DUO security feature but found the design uninspiring and the portal underutilized. Feedback guided me with the final redesign.
