ReDesign Schedule
I structured the project into phases for better organization. Phase 1 encompassed discovery and research, where interviews were conducted to define the design problem. Phase 2 focused on redesign and development, emphasizing usability and user testing to finalize the prototype.
SWOT Analysis
The CSUEB Student Portal Redesign project is poised to capitalize on its strengths in user-centric design and a phased approach to overcome weaknesses and leverage opportunities. However, it must remain vigilant in addressing threats, particularly in a competitive landscape and during the transition phase. The commitment to continuous improvement and user satisfaction will be key to this project.
Strengths
User-Centric Design: The redesign project was driven by a deep understanding of user needs, ensuring that the portal caters to the diverse requirements of current and first-time students.
Phased Approach: Structuring the project into phases allowed for organized research, development, and testing, leading to a well-rounded and effective solution.
Visual Overhaul: The modern and visually appealing design enhances the portal's aesthetic appeal and user engagement, addressing the previous lackluster appearance.
Weaknesses
Legacy Technology: The existing portal may rely on legacy technology, potentially posing challenges in implementing modern design and functionality.
Transition Period: The transition to the new design may require adjustment from users accustomed to the old interface, leading to a temporary learning curve.
Resource Intensive: Maintaining regular updates and keeping the portal aligned with evolving expectations may demand substantial resources over time.
Opportunities
Enhanced User Experience: The redesigned portal provides the opportunity to significantly improve the overall user experience, fostering engagement and satisfaction.
Adaptation to Technology Trends: By staying updated and responsive to evolving technology trends, the portal can remain relevant and in line with students' digital expectations.
Increased Adoption: A user-friendly, intuitive portal is likely to see increased adoption rates, positively impacting student success and retention.
Threats
Competitive Landscape: Other institutions may also be investing in portal redesigns, creating a competitive landscape where CSUEB must continuously innovate to stand out.
User Resistance: Resistance to change among existing users may hinder the successful adoption of the new portal design.
Resource Constraints: Maintaining regular updates and implementing user feedback can be resource-intensive, potentially straining budget and manpower.
Current Design
The existing portal's landing page displayed a lackluster appearance with issues in color usage and information hierarchy. The gray background and overwhelming red color scheme created confusion and a sense of 'danger.' The redesign aimed to make it visually appealing, user-friendly, and modern.
User Feedback
I used different methods like Interviews and surveys with current and first-time students who provided valuable insights. Current students stressed efficient access to academic resources, while first-time students sought clear guidance on registration and onboarding. Both groups desired an intuitive platform.
For Current Students:
Emphasized the significance of efficient access to academic resources, course materials, and campus events.
Expressed strong desire for a user-interface allowing easy navigation to essential services.
For First-time Students:
Highlighted the importance of clear guidance on registration procedures, academic calendars, and campus facilities.
Showed a preference for an intuitive platform that simplifies onboarding and fosters a sense of belonging.
User Persona
Based on research and personal experience as a CSUEB student, I created personas representing diverse user types. This ensured the portal would cater to a wide range of needs.
User Journey Mapping
To redesign myCSUEB student portal I created a user journey to understand the different tasks a user will be performing on the portal. Understanding user tasks from sign-in to sign-out and their touchpoints (dashboard, academics, finances, campus life) helped create a user flow that simplified tasks for both returning and first-time users.
User Testing
A crucial round of usability testing provided insights and feedback. Users appreciated the existing DUO security feature but found the design uninspiring and the portal underutilized. Feedback guided me with the final redesign.
Key Features of the Redesigned Portal
Visual Appeal: A modern, visually appealing design with improved color schemes and information organization.
User-Centric Approach: Prioritizing the needs of both current and first-time students to create a platform that fosters success and belonging.
Regular Updates: A commitment to keeping the portal current and aligned with evolving user expectations.
Comprehensive Services: Offering a wide range of accessible services to enhance the academic experience.
